What is REAL ID?
Established by Congress in 2005, the REAL ID Act sets forth minimum secuirty standards for state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards. The Act prohibits some federal agencies from accepting licenes and identification cards from states that do not meet such security standards. These purposes include accessing certain federal facilities, boarding federally regulated commercial aircraft, and entering nuclear power plants.
Will Arkansas participate in the REAL ID Act?
Arkansas is taking part in the federal nationwide initiative to improve the security of state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards.
When does the REAL ID Act go into effect?
On May 7, 2025, anyone who boards a domestic flight or enters a federal building will either need a REAL ID driver’s license (DL) or Identification Card (ID) or will need to provide a regular identification and additional accepted forms of identification.
